Valley of the Moon

The Valley of the Moon in northern Chile is geologically part of the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range). This range consists of sedimentary deposits—mainly sandstone, clay, and gypsum—that have been folded by tectonic processes. Salt crusts formed through evaporation give the landscape its distinctive appearance. From a geological perspective, the valley is an example of an evaporitic landscape, shaped by erosion from wind and water. It bears similarities to other arid regions characterized by salt and gypsum formations.
